First trip in a new RV, day 6

I am behind in commenting on other people's blogs and hope to do better as the week goes on.

Today we are in Yuma, Arizona, and the wind may be too strong for us to drive up U.S. 8 through the mountain pass tomorrow. We hadn't known it, but apparently the mountain crossing is a common wind hazard. So we changed our plans and will take an alternate route north to U.S. 10, which looks more promising. That will take us an extra day to get to San Diego, but we are in no hurry.

Yuma may well be a lovely city, though all we've seen of it is a Walmart Supercenter and a large number of RV parks. Kind of a comedown after seeing all those Western movies with gunslingers in Yuma. Maybe the gunfights are on the other side of town. All in all, the area doesn't seem especially photogenic. We're in a decent RV park, though; the black swan is one of several that share a small pond on the property.

I'm having trouble uploading more photos, so let's see if I can at least post this blog entry.

Lovely black swan. I've only seen white swans in this area. This one is sure a novelty to me.

This reminds me of a book I read last year entitled "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable," by Nassim Taleb. It was once a truism that all "swans are white" until black ones were seen. Taleb's book deals with events considered impossible because they have never happened before, such as planes deliberately crashing into buildings.

Excellent book.

Love the black swans. I come from Western Australia, and grew up being told that black swans were native only to our state but had been taken overseas because of their novelty value. My husband recently told me this isn't quite true. Oh well.

Well, if I was you, I sure wouldn't want to see a gunfight in the Walmart parking lot or the RV park!

Thanks to the wise advice from Shaman Don, we've decided to sit tight in Yuma for a day and look around here. The wind has died down a lot, but it's morning yet. We don't want a nasty surprise.

I bet if you go just outside the city limits you'll find some nifty stuff from the days of old. Maybe you'll discover some long lost ruins of a place or spurs from a long ago cowboy.
